Whale watching in Costa Rica is an incredible experience that allows visitors to witness the majestic creatures in their natural habitat. The country’s stunning coastline, warm waters, and abundance of marine life make it an ideal destination for this adventure.

Costa Rica is home to several species of whales, including humpback whales, Bryde’s whales, and pilot whales. These gentle giants migrate to the warm waters of the country’s Pacific coast during the months of December to April, providing a unique opportunity for tourists to observe them up close.

Marino Ballena National Park

One of the best places to embark on a whale watching excursion in Costa Rica is the Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita. This marine park spans an impressive 13,500 acres and is a protected area for a diverse range of marine species, including whales. The park offers boat tours that take visitors on a journey to catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures.

As the boat ventures into the open sea, visitors eagerly await the sight of the first spray from a whale’s blowhole. The anticipation builds as the boat gets closer to the area where the whales are known to frequent. Suddenly, a huge humpback breaches the water, its enormous tail crashing back into the ocean with a resounding splash. The excitement on the boat is palpable as everyone marvels at the sheer size and power of the creature.

The humpback whales are known for their acrobatic displays, often leaping out of the water and slapping their fins or tails against the surface. Witnessing these breathtaking aerial maneuvers is a sight that will be etched in visitors’ memories forever. It’s also possible to hear their haunting songs, as male humpbacks often produce intricate melodic patterns to attract mates.

Other fascinating marine life

But it’s not just about the humpback whales. Costa Rica’s waters are teeming with other fascinating marine life. Dolphins often playfully swim alongside the boats, jumping in and out of the wake. Sea turtles can also be spotted gliding gracefully through the water, and occasionally, manta rays and whale sharks make an appearance, adding an element of surprise and wonder to the whale watching experience.

Not only does whale watching in Costa Rica offer an unforgettable encounter with these awe-inspiring creatures, but it also promotes conservation efforts. By participating in responsible whale watching tours, visitors contribute to the preservation of these magnificent animals and their fragile marine ecosystem. Local tour operators adhere to strict guidelines to ensure minimal disturbance to the whales and their environment.

An eco-tourism destination

Costa Rica’s reputation as an eco-tourism destination is further enhanced by its commitment to sustainable practices. The government has implemented measures to protect the country’s rich biodiversity and promote responsible tourism. The whale watching industry plays a crucial role in these efforts, as it raises awareness about the importance of preserving marine life and creates economic incentives for coastal communities to engage in environmentally friendly activities.

Whale watching in Costa Rica offers an extraordinary opportunity to witness the beauty and power of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. The country’s stunning coastline, diverse marine life, and commitment to sustainability make it an ideal destination for this unforgettable adventure. A trip to Costa Rica to witness the awe-inspiring sight of whales breaching the water and the chance to contribute to their conservation efforts is an experience that every nature enthusiast should indulge in.

In September 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, a group of four companies from Monteverde, in Puntarenas, agreed to tie the prices of their coffee, cocoa, and sugarcane tours.  In addition, decided that from that moment on they would donate $1 to the community for each tourist who booked their tours.

It is expected that by the end of September 2023, this fund will reach $130,000, about ¢70 million at the current exchange rate, which is dedicated to different community projects.

The Monteverde Coffee Tour Alliance is made up of the following companies:

“Competition in a conventional market is normal, it is regular.  However, we must understand that today, more than competing, the world needs cooperation.  We are in a single boat, which is the Planet,” the person in charge of Sustainability Education for the Monteverde Coffee Tour, Guillermo Vargas Leitón, said.

Taking the first step

The objective of this group is for coffee tours to “take the first step” in generating this type of funds so that their economic activity has a direct impact on the community in which they operate.

Fund goes to the community

Over the years, different projects have been carried out thanks to the collection of each of those dollars. For example, free environmental education courses have been financed for children and their families in nearby communities and, together with the State Distance University (UNED), they train and advise entrepreneurs.  They also support small businesses to formalize.

In collaboration with Corclima and the municipality, they implement a sidewalk improvement program to encourage people to walk without generating emissions, while doing so safely.

In addition, this alliance together with the Monteverde Community Fund and the Monteverde Institute applied the 2022 Community Survey, with the objective of knowing the current socioeconomic reality.

More recently, the alliance funds one of the community’s youth groups: the Aroma de Café Folkloric Company.Through this group, young people from the community have an opportunity to learn about their community, its customs and traditions.  And through different scenes (such as typical dances and masquerades) they tell other people that story.

“We invite companies from Costa Rica, from any community, to join and have similar experiences.  The purpose is that economic well-being is not only at the level of the individual company but at the level of the community and country,” added Guillermo Vargas.

Between Quetzales and Whales

The cantons of Osa and Coto Brus enhance their tourism offer by linking their tourism components and develop the “Entre Quetzales y Ballenas” campaign.Beach, mountains, national parks, ecotourism farms, microclimates, waterfalls, lagoons, wetlands, hiking, viewpoints, gastronomy, botanical garden, insect museum;  the second largest collection in the country, locally produced coffee tastings and a border post to visit Panama.

Costa Rica is a paradise country, which has everything within a short distance from one destination to another, but many of them have not been discovered by the Costa Rican themselves, this is the case of some cantons in the southern part of the country, such as Osa and Coto Brus.  Two different destinations, but together they have it all!

Osa

There are other nearby attractions, such as private ecotourism farms with tours of safaris in 4×4 vehicles to observe waterfalls, hiking and viewpoints with unique views, such as Hacienda Ébano.

Térraba Sierpe

Wetland – Térraba Sierpe, a natural treasure!, The Sierpe River is considered the largest in Costa Rica, its name comes from the word snake, due to the shape of its channels;  There are certain mythological legends of his name.  Likewise, the mangrove area is a RAMSAR zone in the river where recreational navigation, wildlife observation and a new exploratory trip to the magical lagoon are offered; a giant mirror endowed with endless ecosystems.  Near the place is Caño Island; which is distinguished by occupying the first place for snorkeling in the country and the second for diving.

Coto Brus

For its part, the canton of Coto Brus, just an hour away from Osa,A different tourist offer shines, it has primary and cloud forests that paint the surroundings of La Amistad National Park in an infinite green.

“Coto Brus, is a virgin canton as a tourist destination, its strategy lies in two routes, the first is to train and provide inputs to the seedbeds of the canton, to enhance the quality of the product and service to the visitor, through strategic alliances with INDER and INA.  The other ROUTE is the WATER ROUTE, which is made up of three circuits: the first is the water ROUTE that begins in Coto Brus, but covers the entire buffer zone of the Amistad Park; a route that has binational potential, through the buffer zone that reaches Panama, including above Pérez Zeledón, work is being done with the CTR Territorial Council for Rural Development, here are the development efforts.  Pittier, Gutiérrez Brown and Sabalito are the districts that are being promoted in Coto Brus” expressed Ivette Mora, Vice Mayor of the Municipality of Coto Brus.

Water Route

She then added: “It is called the Water Route, because 24 beautiful and diverse waterfalls are supplied with imposing falls and jets of life up to 149 meters high.  The second circuit is called gastrocultural and bird circuit.  In gastronomy the Italian influence stands out and in bird watching hundreds of species among which the quetzal, bell bird and the toledo (endemic to the area) stand out as the most emblematic”.

But Coto Brus has even more components to discover, such as its biological garden for scientific research, second in number of palm tree species in the world, complemented by rural tourism alternatives that show multiple ventures with tours to learn about the honey production process, the cultivation of high-quality coffee, the visit to farms to explore the inside of immense fig trees measuring several meters or an immersion in the ancestral traditions of the Ngobe Bugle indigenous territory, the Insect Museum with the second largest collection in the country (only the UCR has a larger one) contains insects from all over the world.

Other efforts that the municipality of Coto Brus is working on is the opening of the tourism office, enabling the landing strip that cuts distances with the central valley and other areas of the region that have an impact on tourist resources.  Coto Brus has a different condition, an important cultural mix, such as Ngobe, Italian, Ethic and Panamanian.  Likewise, one of the three legal border posts with Panama is located in the district of Sabalito.

Costa Rica, a tropical paradise nestled in Central America, boasts a diverse and captivating climate. With its lush rainforests, stunning beaches, and breathtaking landscapes, the country’s weather plays a significant role in its natural beauty and attraction. In this essay, we will explore the enchanting weather patterns that make Costa Rica a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Tropical Climate:

Costa Rica’s location near the equator blesses it with a tropical climate throughout the year. The country experiences two main seasons: the dry season (verano) and the rainy season (invierno). The tropical climate provides an average annual temperature ranging from 70°F (21°C) in the highlands to 81°F (27°C) on the coasts, making it an ideal destination for sun-seekers.

Dry Season:

The dry season in Costa Rica lasts from December to April and is characterized by clear skies, minimal rainfall, and warm temperatures. During this time, visitors can enjoy abundant sunshine and indulge in various outdoor activities such as hiking, beach outings, and exploring the national parks. The dry season is the perfect time to visit popular destinations like Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula, where crystal clear waters and golden sandy beaches await.

Rainy Season:

From May to November, the rainy season embraces Costa Rica, transforming the landscape into a vibrant green paradise. While the rainfall can be intense, it usually occurs in the late afternoon or evening, leaving the mornings sunny and clear. The rainy season offers a unique experience, as the forests come alive with lush vegetation, cascading waterfalls, and an abundance of wildlife. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy activities like white-water rafting, bird watching, or exploring the enchanting rainforests.

Microclimates:

Costa Rica’s diverse topography contributes to the existence of microclimates throughout the country. The highlands, such as Monteverde and Arenal, experience cooler temperatures due to their elevation, making them perfect for those seeking a break from the heat. Cloud forests envelop these regions, creating a mystical atmosphere and offering a chance to observe unique biodiversity and stunning landscapes.

Volcanic Influence:

Costa Rica is home to several active volcanoes, including Arenal, Poás, and Rincon de la Vieja. These volcanic regions add another dimension to the country’s weather patterns. The volcanic activity contributes to the formation of hot springs, geothermal vents, and geysers, providing visitors with rejuvenating experiences amidst the natural beauty of the rainforests.

Costa Rica’s enchanting weather, characterized by its tropical climate, distinct dry and rainy seasons, microclimates, and volcanic influence, offers a myriad of possibilities for adventure and exploration. Whether basking in the sunshine on pristine beaches, trekking through lush forests, or discovering hidden waterfalls, Costa Rica’s weather ensures that there is never a dull moment. Embracing the natural wonders of this beautiful country is a truly unforgettable experience for all who visit.

The request to extend the deadline was made by the National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur).“The National Chamber of Tourism says, the term of residences and stays is very short to encourage consumption by tourists,” said Gamboa.

Boosting the national economy

The objective is for this group of tourists to increase their expenses in the country and boost the national economy. The measure applies to tourists from countries such as the United States, Canada, Germany, France and Spain.

You can engage in activities such as hiking, wildlife spotting, or visiting local landmarks, providing a more comprehensive exploration of the destination. This not only enriches your personal experience but also contributes to the preservation of natural and cultural heritage sites by promoting their value and generating revenue for their maintenance [2].

Support the local economy

Extending your stay also allows you to support the local economy. By spending more time in a destination, you have the opportunity to patronize local businesses, including accommodations, restaurants, and shops. This helps to distribute tourism income more evenly among the local community, ensuring that small businesses and entrepreneurs benefit from tourism [2].
