The constant changes in the markets have caused companies, in recent years, to have the need to look for profiles that are different from those that they traditionally hired for their jobs. However, sometimes it is not so easy for companies to find the talent they require based on those needs.

An example of this is the Future Jobs Report of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). It indicates that Latin America has one of the largest skills gaps in the world and that close to 40% of organizations in Latin America report having problems filling their vacancies. Also, almost 70% do not have the right candidates to fill those positions.

For Karla Sánchez, INCAE Business School’s Senior Regional Admissions Manager, this situation puts into perspective another specific situation in the region: the appearance of the so-called “careers or professionals of the future.”

In this sense, for the specialist, the changes in social and economic factors, as well as the need among companies to compete and prevail in the market through greater cost efficiency with the transfer of their operations to countries in the region, promote the transformation and strengthening of the academic training that is imparted to develop a highly qualified workforce.

“There are various reasons why professions evolve. One of them is the greater incorporation of technology by companies in their operations, which in turn leads to a greater digitization of their processes and functions. Another lies in the fast pace with which changes are generated in the different areas”, mentioned Sánchez.

Careers of the future

According to Sánchez, there are five careers that will become more popular among companies and professionals in the coming years:

Business administration with a vision of business development

The professional who identifies opportunities knows how to manage projects, resources, how to lead innovation and changes.

Digital marketing professionals

Specialists in establishing communication and genuine connection with potential customers, who are capable of creating experiences and generating interest at the right time and through the right means.

Engineering focused on development, programming, data analytics

Professionals who can provide key information to organizations, as well as create solutions that facilitate contact throughout the companies’ value chain.

Healthcare professionals

Boom in mental health thanks to the scope of content that has normalized talking about topics that were previously taboo in our society.

Other specialties such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity

“Technology mastery, by itself, is not enough. For example, we have the big ‘winners’ during the pandemic. Companies like Meta (formerly Facebook) that in recent months have had to let more than 10,000 people go because their strategic leaders overestimate the need for staff during the height of the pandemic and the peak demand for the services offered by these platforms. The careers of the future, in addition, must encourage the development of skills such as curiosity, discipline, resilience, leadership capacity, as well as problem solving”, affirmed the manager.

For the development of these careers, Sánchez highlighted a challenge that currently exists and that is that universities must be attentive to their contents, current curriculum vs. relevant, and how to permeate key competencies for the current labor market in their students.

The post 6 Reasons Why Surfing Is the Best Sport of All appeared first on The Costa Rica News.

My surf friends have given me very good reasons that show that surfing is the best sport of all. Do you want to know what they are?

1. Surfing makes you fit

I’ve said it many times; surfing is the hardest sport I have ever practiced. Everything is trained, from arms, shoulders to torso and legs. The best way to train is to get into the water as much as you can, but as I know that it is not always possible, this video to train surfing out of the water can help you with your goals.

2. Surfing makes you patient

We have discussed this on occasion. Sitting on the board you have to be patient for the series to come, and once it comes you have to be patient until you wait for your perfect wave.

3. Surfing puts you in contact with nature

Without a doubt, it is one of the points that I like the most about surfing, the communion with the ocean, being part of the landscape even during the hour or 2 hours that you are in the water. You, your board and the sea. If you are surfing on a virgin beach, this feeling is multiplied by two.

4. Surfing makes you happy

It is a scientific fact. Being in the sun is good for your health, and if you mix that with playing sports, this makes the endorphins shoot up. With surfing you leave problems behind and that always makes you come out of the water with a smile on your face. In fact, in traditional medicine, some doctors already prescribe it against depression and other ailments.

5. You will travel more

From your first wave, the only thing you can think of is destinations to catch waves. You will start touring the world;

6. Surfing will reinforce your personality

With surfing you become more persistent, you don’t give up at the first disappointment. You keep wallowing in the waves until you achieve your goal. You will get out of your comfort zone again and again, and this will undoubtedly make you grow as a person, making you stronger than you would have thought possible.

Now friends, tell us why you surf?

Investing in young people, creating awareness on the road and taking advantage of the country’s natural resources are some of Andrey Amador‘s dreams for Costa Rica to stand out as a benchmark country worldwide.

The Team Ineos rider spoke about the Andrey Amador Gran Fondo that will take place on February 13th, departing from Paseo Colón and arriving in Orotina and Quepos, traveling along Route 27, which will be closed only to cyclists.

Great stars of world sport will participate in the event, such as Richard Carapaz, Olympic champion, Alberto Contador, winner of the Big Three (Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España).

Below is an excerpt from some of the comments of the national cycling star:

What is the economic and social impact that the Andrey Amador Gran Fondo can have for the country?

First, a country with sports is the best investment, health is favored, expenses on medical issues are reduced, in social matters power sharing and in tourism, it is nice to see how such an affected sector benefits hotel owners have called me in Quepos telling me that for February they are at full capacity for the event, families go and enjoy.

What message do you want to give about the alliance with Aconvivir and the “Compartamos la Vía” campaign?

Aconvivir is a non-profit association that has become fully involved, you have to be aware that it is not ideal to go in single file, it is more fun in a group activity but it is best to go up to the Irazú at 5:30 in the morning, which can be done perfectly as a couple, otherwise single file, even if we don’t like it. Also car drivers understand that we have to share the road, there is no rivalry, we cannot go on the grass, there must be respect from both parties, the best thing is to generate harmony.

Can Costa Rica be a world high performance or preseason center for cyclists in the region?

Of course, a mirror for us is Colombia, we have nothing to envy in terms of terrain or climate, we can even have better climate, altitude, and the quality of cyclists. Costa Rica has all the tools, climate and roads to make the sport grow, I think there is plenty of talent, but support is lacking.

Yes, support is necessary, sending young people abroad and training them?

We can be that reference, it happened to me in Spain that everyone knows about Costa Rica, without underestimating the others, they say it is beautiful, they like it, that they are going to come or they have already come, it could well be a place where teams or national teams from other countries come to train, but there is a lack of support and infrastructure.

Did you know that a child´s tantrum is an emotional kidnapping? The amygdala in the brain is an almond-shaped structure that is closely related to stress and anxiety processes. When the amygdala is activated (generally in situations of fear or anger), we enter an emotional hijacking. This means that our emotions take control of what happens. The most important thing is to do NOTHING, as it is essential to remain calm to model calm and peace. So breathe in and take control of your emotions.

Here are some useful recommendations for parents:

  • Don’t take it personally
  • Remember that the child is not doing anything to you, he is going through a bad time.
  • Don’t take it personally. It is a strong feeling of lack of control.
  • Get up close and level with him, try to make eye contact. Body language is essential.
  • Do not judge the emotion, do not ask for explanations, do not ask for it to calm down.
  • Help your child or student to name the emotion and put words to what they are experiencing.
  • Become his emotional translator (narrating what the child is going through).
  • Show empathy and respect. That creates a wonderful calming effect. When the brain perceives empathy the vagus nerve helps to relax the body.
  • Offer various options such as: a hug, drink water, breathe, blow bubbles or simply be close and emotionally available.
  • Support co-regulation and emotional self-regulation.
  • Wait for the child to get all his emotional overflow (accompanying in a respectful way), our body language is essential.
  • Become an emotional translator, describe what is happening, naming the emotion.
  • Empathize, connect and validate. Putting yourself in the child’s shoes and using connecting phrases.
  • Model calm, with your voice, body language and closeness.
  • Remember that tantrums are not controlled, accompanied or managed.

A new year inspires billions of people in the world to set goals for the next 365 days. Unfortunately for lack of having designed a concrete plan to achieve them, 33% of all of them will be discarded by February and nine out of ten objectives will not be achieved in these 12 months.

To increase exponentially the probability of being part of the ten percent that does achieve its mission, the suggestion is to put into practice all the following tips:

  1. The goals must be coherent and aligned

With the ideal of life embodied in the “Blackboard with your Vision”. Any decision that is going to be made must be compared against what was agreed in this magical tool and based on this, discard or include it as the case may be.

For example, if in the life vision it was declared “I am Financially Free before December 31, 2026”. It makes sense then that one of the goals is “My equity is greater than $ 100,000 before December 31, 2022.” And the idea of changing the car will be easily discarded.

2- Hiring a mentor

To whom you have to deliver progress reports on a weekly and monthly basis increases the chances of success by 80%. For this reason, people who have personal trainers change their body composition more quickly since two factors come into play that help them.

First, the payment of a price that keeps them at bay from their training, rest, diet, hydration because if they did something against the above they know that they are throwing their money away.

Second, close monitoring to be able to consult, correct, be weighed and measured periodically in order to control all the variables. A variation is to have a person who is willing to achieve the goal with you. Ideally it is the couple, because in this way both are in the same line. This is the same as having a gym partner to train who is counting on us.

3. Pick few goals

The fewer goals the more likely they are to be achieved because time, energy and money resources are channeled. Continuing with the model of the first point, a couple of additional specific goals are sufficient: My income is greater than $ 40,000 per year before December 31, 2022. My passive income is greater than $ 10,000 per year before December 31, 2022.

4. Writing goals by hand

And on paper increases the chances of reaching them by 40% according to studies. By putting the Reticular Activation System to work, the mind filters and focuses on the information that is important to achieve them.

5. Using a format such as SMART

Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-based or GPS: 1 Goal, 3 Priorities, 15 Strategies, requires analyzing each of the goals at micro levels and how they should be executed and qualified.

Acquiring multicultural experience, strengthening soft skills highly desired by the labor market, significantly increasing the ability to perform in a second language, and developing a remarkable and fruitful network of professional contacts; those are 4 real advantages for those who decide to jump out of their comfort zone and venture out to test their professional skills in a new country.

We live in times when the limits of the professional geographical space are increasingly blurred and, of course, globalization has strongly impacted the tendency for more workers to decide to overcome their own borders. It required? In the first place the security in the performance that offers to know their own profession in depth, and secondly, the adaptation and flexibility to adapt to a different cultural context.

Thus, one of the first aspects that will define the potential of an international worker is related to his soft skills such as resilience, autonomy, determination, self-confidence and cultural openness, among others.

The other aspect, no less important, is to have a clear vision of the purpose and conditions sought by the professional by obtaining professional experience abroad. In this sense, it is recommended to have carried out a prospection of the target countries to target, determine the characteristics of the labor market in the eligible country or countries and, of course, be clear if the learning obtained can be used to develop their own skills in your home country.

The importance of organizational support

Although being willing to face uncontrolled situations is part of the logic of the professional adventure abroad, the truth is that today’s workers can also count on the support of organizational structures that facilitate logistical aspects for professional people. One example is the Participate Learning program, designed for educators who come to teach a second language in the United States. To date, in a country like Costa Rica, since 1987, 250 educators have been part of this exchange, of which there are 60 who are actively working in the USA.

Participate Learning is a complete program that provides educators with more than 2 years of full-time experience, the possibility of doing their job without having to worry about aspects such as managing a work visa on their own, organizing themselves to rent a house, procure a transportation mechanism that takes you to employment, make sure you have legal, well-supported working conditions and with all the benefits and guarantees that a citizen of the country can have, or even have to worry about the immigration status of the worker’s family if he decides to travel in the company of his close ones.

In the case of the Participate Learning program, all the aspects mentioned above are facilitated by an organizational structure that helps the selected educators so that, after the due recruitment process, they have the necessary conditions so that they can concentrate 100% on their professional performance.

As of August 2021, the Participate Learning program opened its registrations to apply for the recruitment process with 100 places for new teachers who want to travel to support bilingual teaching and cultural exchange in the United States. Other requirements to be eligible, in addition to having 2 years of experience as a full-time educator, include advanced command of the English language, being officially licensed teachers, having a current driver’s license and driving experience.

At this time Participate Learning has open applications for elementary education positions, in 2 languages, both the alternative in Spanish/English and in Mandarin/English; in addition to places for teaching social studies, mathematics, or science in 2 languages (Spanish/English).

Educator Rebeca Pacheco has been one of the people recruited into the Participate Learning program. For her, this international experience has helped her to develop as a professional, to learn new work methodologies, and the management of technology within education.

With accelerating changes in job automation, people will have power over the machines by developing professional skills in tandem with the technical skills of each job. ManpowerGroup presented its Human Age 2.0 study, where it reflected the future forces in the world of work, recognizing four global structural and cyclical trends, these were: demographic changes, technological revolution, greater individual choice, and customer sophistication.

In less than 10 years, the world of work has faced unprecedented changes where the Pandemic accelerated some of the trends and created others. In this new stage, the technological revolution demonstrated its value in maintaining the continuity of business, jobs and the connection from person to person.

Ability to learn

The technological revolution proposes that people should have the ability to learn, a condition that has also changed in recent times where the trend of shorter training sessions in conjunction with the health crisis is accelerating the demand for technical professionals. As companies digitize, automate and transform into this new normal, it is more important than ever to find the right combination of technical skills and human strengths.

Although the new generations want to carry out professional career marathons where they seek to coexist with several jobs and different professional stages, the Pandemic modified this condition in which maintaining their employment is the main priority, where people fear losing the work flexibility they have gained, and 8 out of 10 employees want a better balance between family and work environments.

“The general fear of keeping their job responds in a certain way to the degree of automation that various work tasks are impacting, people should ask themselves how repetitive their activities are, if the answer is positive, they should consider developing new skills taking into account which ones will be demanded in the future and which are not replaceable by technology”, Soto concluded.

ManpowerGroup has found that the 10 most in-demand professional skills are:

• Communication

• Priorization

• Adaptability

• Taking initiative

• Integrity

• Analytical thinking

• Build relationships

• Empathy

• Coaching

• Resilience

The post 50 Things to Do in Costa Rica (Part 4) appeared first on The Costa Rica News.

Finally, we bring up the last part of this series of 50 things you should do when visiting    Costa Rica:

41. Look for snakes in Cahuita National Park

A very striking animal that can be found in the South Caribbean area is the yellow tinsel. It is a poisonous snake with a beautiful color. They are not usually very large; at most they are about 80 centimeters long. They usually live curled up in trees.

It is relatively easy to sight them in the Cahuita National Park, which can be accessed with a voluntary donation. In addition to finding fauna, Cahuita is a spectacular place to snorkel if the sea is calm.

When we went up there, in December 2017, we were quite disappointed with the state of the park. We understood that a few days before there was a strong storm that threw down many trees and others, but we found it unacceptable that a national park is full of waste from its visitors.

42. Eat authentic Caribbean “rice and beans”

Another essential thing to do in Costa Rica is to eating its typical Caribbean dish: rice and beans. As the name suggests, the meal consists of white rice with sautéed beans and coconut milk. It is usually served as an accompaniment to most local dishes.

43. Relax in the Gandoca Manzanillo Reservation

We dare to say that our favorite beaches in the entire country were those of the Gandoca Manzanillo Reservation. They are surrounded by palm trees and dense tropical vegetation, with sand of an ideal tan color and crystal clear water. They are small beaches but there are not many people either, so you can enjoy it quietly.

The entrance to the reservation is free and, although it is a huge space, it is not advisable to leave the main path that leads to a viewpoint. The main risk is to end up lost on the secondary roads!

44. Do not miss out on going to Playa Punta Uva

Another splendid beach in the South Caribbean area is Playa Punta Uva. Like all the beaches in the area, it is surrounded by palm trees and has very clear water. In addition, it is easily accessed through a path that leaves the main road, which is appreciated because other beaches are more hidden.

Our advice: We stayed at the La Kukula Lodge, quite close to this beach. If you are looking for a quiet environment and sleep in the middle of nature, we recommend it 100%.

45. Cross the border and discover the earthly paradise of Bocas del Toro

If you spend several days in the Costa Rican Caribbean, you should not miss visiting the famous archipelago of Bocas del Toro. Although it is in Panama, you will notice that it is super easy to get there from Costa Rica either on your own or with several organized excursions. And you will also notice that Panama is much cheaper than Costa Rica.

Once there, you can enjoy their islands; all of them bathed in crystal clear waters so that you can indulge yourself. Actually, there are several interesting islands, connected to each other by their famous water-taxis.

46. Visit an animal rescue center

One of the most beautiful things to do in Costa Rica is to see the great work that many centers do rescuing animals and returning them to their habitat as much as possible. Some of the best known are Jaguar Rescue Center, Sloth Sanctuary or Tree of Life in the South Caribbean area. All of them organize tours to show the work they do, as well as raise money with the entrance fee to continue helping animals in need.

47. Spot a sloth moving slowly in the trees

We could not forget one of the animals that generate the most curiosity among foreign visitors. Sloths are truly a national symbol. They conquer everyone with their slow movements and their sleeping postures in the trees.

This slowness is due to its diet based on the leaves of trees belonging to the genus Cecropia. Such a diet gives them very little energy; they have components that make them difficult to digest. Some people say that these leaves even act in a similar way to a psychotropic substance in humans. Sloths can take more than a month to digest them!

Did you know that…? Sloths are related to anteaters.

48. Sleeping and eating inside an airplane, something different to do in Costa Rica

For aircraft lovers, in the area of Manuel Antonio there is a couple of exciting places. The first place is the Hotel Costa Verde that has an old remodeled Boeing 727 that belonged to South Africa Air and Avianca airlines, which serves as a luxury room. Of course, each night costs around US$ 400, depending on the season you go.

The second place is El Avión restaurant, where you can settle for a cheap dining, especially if you have a tight budget. As the name suggests, the restaurant sets the tables around a C-123 Fairchild cargo plane. In addition, from its terrace you will have incredible views of the sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

49. Climb Cerro Chirripó and sight both oceans, a great plan to do in Costa Rica for mountain lovers

If you are in shape and you like challenges, an essential activity to do in Costa Rica is climbing Cerro Chirripó. At 3,820 meters of altitude, it is the highest peak in Costa Rica. From its summit, on clear days, you can even sight both oceans. Of course, to get there you will have to break a sweat!

At this stage, we want to emphasize that it is not an activity suitable for everyone. The fact of the matter is that you have to be physically prepared and have tried to reach peaks of a similar altitude before, because altitude sickness can play a trick on you.

The climate in the high mountains is ever changing and temperatures can turn 0 ºC during part of the ascent. So you also have to be dressed with a suitable outfit and very resistant footwear to carry out this activity.

The most advisable thing is to dedicate 2 or 3 days to it; the most common strategy is doing it in 2 stages. The first stage, of about 6 or 7 hours, consists of climbing up to 3,400 meters to Refugio El Páramo, where we recommend spending the night. And the next day, in the second stage, try getting through to the summit in about 2 or 3 hours. Sighting the sunrise from the highest point in the country is, without a doubt, something unforgettable to do in Costa Rica.

Important note: In order to do this activity, it is mandatory to book it 10 days in advance on the official website of the National System of Conservation Areas of Costa Rica.

50. Do not stress out… Be “Pura Vida”!

Costa Ricans go right for their own pace. As we have said before, Costa Rica is considered one of the happiest countries in the world, so people try to smile despite any problem. In short, this is a great country, but what did disappoint us was its infrastructure; sometimes you might get stuck for more than an hour in one of the typical traffic jams. What is more, when there is an accident on the road, everything collapses.

It is possible that more than once your workday has been extended many more hours than you had planned. Perhaps it happens to you frequently and you feel the weight of the clock on your shoulders. Why is there no more than 24 hours in the day? It’s a fairly common question at a time when workplace pressures – company-required or self-imposed – are haunting us all the time. That’s when we enter the productivity challenge.

How to get more done in less time?

It is unhealthy to allow other people’s priorities to determine your own. Productivity does not have to do with how many hours you work or how many pending tasks you can mark on your list, it’s about doing what you need to do to work efficiently.

These are four strategies that highly productive people use:

  1. Align work with your “chronotype”
The “chronotype” is simply a way of referring to the biological clock. It has to do with the natural sleep-wake cycle that we travel through 24 hours a day. Since each person has their own chronotype, it is important to determine what your highest and lowest energy moments are during the cycle.

About 10% of people are “larks” who feel more energetic in the morning. At the other end of the spectrum are the 20% of the population who are “owls” or people who do their best work at night. Most of the population is somewhere in the middle. They typically experience an energy peak before noon, an energy drop after lunch, and a second boost in the late afternoon.

Here the key is that you organize your day considering that biological clock, in such a way that the activities that demand greater concentration or that are more relevant are done in your moments of greatest energy and that you stop the most routine activities (such as answering emails, for example ) in those moments when your energy drops.
2.Plan the working day at the end of the previous day
A productive day doesn’t just happen. It requires planning. If we write down what we want to do, when and where, it is much more likely that you will achieve your goals. An effective way to do this is to write down your three priorities for the next day, that is, those things that you cannot stop doing.

The next step is to complete the list of everything to come, ideally hour by hour. And it is also convenient to add at the end tasks that are minimal to do between meetings or in any waiting time. At the end of the day, what helps the most is careful planning.

  1. Develop rituals
These are rituals related to where and when to work according to the type of tasks. By doing it consistently, your brain will associate those physical and temporal cues with those tasks. Why is time and space important?

Basically because it helps us to change the mental “switch”. For example, there are people who when they need to solve complex problems or creative challenges, they use certain routes to walk and think.

Others prefer to separate tasks between one office space and another, something that helps to break the monotony and also influences the attitude with which we approach certain challenges.

And if you work from home, it helps to define what to do where in the house. Or divide the space between morning and afternoon. The important thing is to create rituals by doing the same type of activity in the same place or at the same time.

For example, you can attend zoom meetings in the bedroom, answer emails in the living room, and concentrate on an armchair. After practicing it for a couple of weeks, a flow will be generated that makes it easier to achieve the objectives in less time.

  1. Avoid blocking your calendar 100%
A completely blocked day can give you a false sense of productivity. You will not have time to solve unforeseen events or for moments of creativity or social contact with members of your team.

If your calendar seems to always be full, deliberately schedule time to do nothing. You can use that time as a time for unexpected tasks that come up during the day or to take a short break that can help you clear your head and move on. With more energy.

We are near February 14th, a very special date. We invite you to celebrate it in a unique and special way in the “Pura Vida” style and showing that on this day the true essence of love must reign. And not social or commercial impositions.

Here we present 5 activities typical of Valentine’s Day distanced from materialism that will undoubtedly feed your soul:

1) Feel and practice self-love.

It has been repeatedly made known that in order to love others you must first love yourself. And although this idea seems ambiguous, it is totally true. In this case, the most important thing is that you show what you are capable of feeling for yourself.

Spend time for yourself, time alone, try to read that book that you have not been able to read. “Do not square” your life not everything should be scheduled. Enjoy the cool morning breeze and start this time if an exercise routine appropriate to your body and lifestyle. Start by forgiving yourself and loving who you are.

2) Visit and share with those most in need.

In many cases, the most needy are visible to all but no one sees them. Today the overcrowding and loneliness experienced in many care homes for the elderly or orphan children are a reality that is seldom touched on these holidays such as the day of love and friendship.

That is why we invite you to celebrate this day by visiting any of these centers to bring a little joy, good humor and happiness to these people. They will know how to thank you for every detail and an action like this will be forever anchored in their hearts. Do not think that actions like these are little thing because in these times a small solidarity action makes the difference.

“Sometimes we feel that what we do is just a drop in the sea, but the sea would be less if it lacked a drop.” Teresa of Calcutta.

3. Do not give flowers that will wither quickly – plant them.

One of the most representative elements in the whole world to celebrate Valentine’s Day is to give beautiful, exotic and highly attractive flowers but in reality this is a gift with little meaning because after a few days they will wither and die .

The most important thing in this case is that you plant a seed and take care of it until it blooms. Apart from a beautiful action, you will also be giving a great little respite to our environment.

4. Make your contribution together with your partner.

It is extremely important and more in these times that we live to help collaborate and put ourselves in the place of the other. For this it is essential to check your closet and remove all those clothes that you no longer use and that are only occupying unnecessary space in your rapper.

Once you have carried out this action with your partner, friends or family, select everything that is in good condition and take care of giving it to people in need. They will always be grateful for this beautiful action.

5. Turn your space into a place where love reigns.

It is not necessary to go out to luxurious restaurants or be with a couple this day to celebrate it. The most important thing is that the essence of love is maintained and you know how to handle it.

In this particular case, involve your partner if you have one or friends and why not family members and prepare an unforgettable dinner together at home that does not have to envy anything from luxurious restaurants. Reinvent yourself, be happy and live the true essence of love.
