Although the Covid-19 pandemic has been critical and has caused millions of deaths around the world, if it were not for it, there would not have been awareness about the importance of taking care of both physical and mental health.  In just the first year of the pandemic, diseases such as anxiety and depression increased 25%, reveals the World Health Organization.

This situation also made it possible to revalue the options available to address well-being in general, which triggered the growth of the wellness industry, with 10% annual growth, mentioned Alberto Cortina, director of GrupoVitali.

“We are increasingly aware of the importance of being well, not only in terms of physical conditioning, but also of mental and spiritual well-being, in work spaces, and how we should support the home office.  That translates into exponential growth in the industry in all sectors,” he stated.

He explained that this postcovid stage is one of the best to start wellness businesses, since the offer is wide and you can participate in different categories such as the physical, mental, spas, hot springs, relaxation centers, nutrition and weight control, beauty and personal care, tourism and real estate.  Although some were seriously affected during the pandemic, a sustainable recovery is estimated.

Likewise, he indicated, many of these sectors that were aggravated by the pandemic, such as spas and gyms that had a 37% contraction, have innovated in their models by leveraging hybrid, thus achieving an increase of 29% with an expected growth of 10% the next five years.  To do this, tailored plans must be made.

For example, if the idea is to start with a spa or you already had one and want to renew, you have to approach the business from a concept that is not based only on the physical or recreational part, but rather a healthy one, from food, well-being. mental, mindfulness or meditation.

Making it part of the lifestyle

“The proposal is not to stay in something recreational, but to make it part of the lifestyle where we provide spaces so that you can achieve a state of deep relaxation and a connection with yourself, and make that space something yours, something that societies need with very accelerated rhythms.”

Another category in high demand is: beauty and personal care, which in 2017 generated a billion dollars in market value, a figure that increased to 1.2 billion in 2019. Although there was also a contraction due to the pandemic, it maintains a growth of 1.4 billion by 2025. “This is an example of an already large market where there are many players but which continues to grow.”Meditation and mindfulness will also continue to grow by 25%, approximately by 2025.

Costa Rica, leader in tourism

One of the areas where Costa Rica has great opportunities for entrepreneurs is wellness tourism, as the country leads this category in Latin America and ranks seventh worldwide.  Its projected growth is 21% annually by 2030, a spill of 10 billion dollars.

“Costa Rica has a lot of potential in terms of pre-Hispanic traditions, herbalism, traditional medicine, ancestral connection with the land, among others.  We have all the elements to capitalize on this potential. Furthermore, geographically we have it all: jungle, forest, mountains, and we have an advantage in proximity to the United States.”Likewise, a lot of work must be done on sustainability because it is one of the pillars that wellness tourism will most demand.

How to start

Although some sectors stand out, there are opportunities for growth in any of them. Cortina stressed that we must learn to capitalize on the offer. For example, in tourism, doing business with spiritual or yoga retreats, Costa Rican ceremonies, herbal knowledge or niche tours.

The strategy must be a tailored suit, with an ethical framework that impacts the well-being of people and the environment, sustainable, innovating what exists and adding technology to create better experiences, depending on the sector sought.  Investments will depend on what you want, since starting a tour project can be more economical than a spa or gym business.“The formula is not universal, it is personal and depends on the sector.  The key is creativity, strategy and whether you have alliances,” he concluded.

The results of a study just published confirmed the great potential of psilocybin in the treatment of major depression.  Interest and evidence in favor of psychedelic drugs as a treatment for mental disorders is increasing.  The following question then arises: is the current medical world capable of removing these molecules from illegality and using them as drugs?

The new data

The American phase 2 study involved 104 adult patients who had suffered from major depressive disorder for more than two months with symptoms of moderate or severe severity.  Patients with psychotic or manic episodes or suicidal ideation were excluded from the study.  Participants were randomly assigned to receive a single dose of psilocybin or niacin (active placebo).  Administration took place in a controlled environment, accompanied by psychological support.  The primary outcome was improvement in depression (Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale, MADRS; range 0-60) after six weeks.

Depressive symptoms decreased more with psilocybin than with niacin (mean difference -12.3 [95% CI -17.5 to -7.2]; p<0.001).  A significant difference was already observed eight days after treatment (mean difference -12.0 [95% CI: -16.6 to -7.4]; p<0.001).  Patients treated with psilocybin also showed improvement in psychosocial functioning.  No serious adverse events occurred during the study, however, psilocybin treatment was associated with a higher frequency of adverse events.

 It’s not a miracle cure

“The study by Raison and colleagues provides an excellent example of the potential of the new approach using psilocybin for patients with major depressive disorder,” said Rachel Yehuda, professor of psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and chair of the Department of Medicine. Mental Health at the James J. Peters Medical Center (New York), and Amy Lehrner, his assistant at the same institutions.

“The psychedelic approach is radically different from traditional approaches that attempt to suppress depressive symptoms by targeting the presumed underlying pathophysiology or biological dysregulation,” they say, emphasizing that the benefits of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy are usually small and gradual (up to the point that true remission can take years) and that symptoms can reappear after stopping psychotropic drugs, which are responsible for several side effects.  Psychedelic therapies address the cause of symptoms, rather than simply suppressing them.  In this case, a drug is administered in a few sessions (sometimes in a single session) in a context that offers the opportunity to integrate and synthesize the revelations that occur during the therapy session.” It should be noted that, before being prohibited As illegal drugs, psychedelic compounds had been used in psychotherapy precisely to help patients open up.

 A challenge for the future

Classic psychedelics have rapid and profound effects on perception, cognitive processes and consciousness, which can lead to heightened awareness of one’s own state and feelings of connection that last for several hours,” the two experts explain. Psychedelics can also induce difficult experiences and challenging, so they should be used carefully in the presence of facilitators or therapists trained to work with patients experiencing non-ordinary states of consciousness.

“Psychedelic therapies require a rethinking of the way mental health care is delivered, in which the drug is combined with psychotherapy and administered in a new environment and framework,” they conclude, highlighting the challenge it poses for the healthcare system, “which will require an investment of time and resources and it is unlikely that these approaches will be widely available to patients with psychiatric disorders in the coming years, except within clinical trials.

Eye exams are vitally important for your overall health and well-being, and, for many, glasses are an essential part of everyday life. The truth is some people can’t see without their glasses. And vision gets worse, not better as you get older. The question is, can you get vision health coverage if you are on Medicare?

Eye Health Coverage Under Medicare

Rest assured, Medicare does cover eye health, but the amount of vision health coverage you have depends on your plan.

You have two options available when choosing a Medicare Plan: Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C). Original Medicare will only cover treatments for eye illnesses or injury, or exams for people with a high risk of developing an eye-related disease. It does not cover routine eye exams or eyeglasses. If you want full vision health coverage, you will need Medicare Advantage.

Original Medicare Vs. Medicare Advantage

Original Medicare is Medicare Part A plus Medicare Part B. You have the option to add Medigap Supplemental Coverage and Prescription Drug Coverage, or Medicare Part D. Medicare Advantage is a Medicare-approved private insurance plan. It is made up of bundle packages that include all of the benefits you receive with Medicare Parts A and B plus extra benefits like vision, hearing, and prescription drug coverage. You may be able to receive coverage for eyeglasses and routine eye exams through Medicare Advantage.

What Medicare Part A Covers

Medicare Part A is hospital insurance. It will cover:

  • Inpatient treatments for eye disease
  • Inpatient treatments for eye injury
  • Medical emergencies involving eye treatments
  • Eye exams related to hospital treatments
  • Medications prescribed for inpatient treatments

Once deductibles have been paid, you can expect Medicare to pay for 100% of your hospital bill for all Medicare-covered inpatient medical treatments for up to 60 days. If you are still in the hospital after 60 days, you will be responsible for a daily copay.

What Medicare Part B Covers

Medicare Part B is medical insurance. It covers doctors’ visits, outpatient treatments, medical supplies necessary for treatment, and prevention services. In terms of eye health, Medicare Part B covers:

  • Outpatient surgical treatments
  • Outpatient post-surgical treatments
  • One pair of glasses or corrective lenses for someone who had cataract surgery, but you must get the glasses or corrective lenses from a Medicare-approved supplier
  • A prosthetic eye from a Medicare-approved provider
  • Outpatient treatments to prevent eye disease or injury
  • Annual eye exams for anyone with a high risk of developing an eye disease (such as people with diabetes, glaucoma, or macular degeneration)

After the deductible is paid, you can expect that Medicare Part B will cover 80% of the Medicare-approved costs of Medicare-covered services.

What Doesn’t Original Medicare Cover?

Original Medicare does not cover:

  • Routine eye exams
  • Eyeglasses

What You Receive with Medicare Advantage

Because Medicare Advantage is a private plan, you will need to closely compare plans to make sure that you receive the vision health coverage you need. As a part of Medicare Advantage, you receive:

  • All the benefits you receive in Medicare Parts A and B
  • (Most likely) Medicare Part D – prescription drug coverage

Plus, your plan may include:

  • Vision, hearing, and dental coverage
  • Routine eye exams
  • Eyeglasses and other corrective vision products
  • Non-disease-related (elective) outpatient surgery, such as corrective laser eye surgery

Medigap

In order to be eligible for Medigap, Medicare Supplemental Insurance, you must choose the Original Medicare plan. Medigap helps with out-of-pocket medical fees, such as copays. It does not include vision coverage

Medicaid

You may be eligible for Medicaid. If so, you may be able to receive coverage for routine eye exams and glasses. It all depends on the state you live in. These are the vision health services Medicaid may possibly cover:

  • Treatments for eye injuries
  • Treatments for eye diseases
  • Preventative treatments
  • Symptoms, including prescription drugs
  • Routine eye exams
  • Eyeglasses

Vision Care Insurance

If you are unsatisfied with the eye health coverage you receive from Medicare, you may want to consider private insurance just for vision. If you do, Medicare will work with other insurance plans. Call the Benefits Coordination & Recovery Center at 1-855-798-2627 or go to Medicare.gov to better understand how Medicare coordinates benefits with other insurance companies and plans.

Cycling is not only a fun and enjoyable activity, but it is also a great way to improve overall health and well-being. Whether you cycle for leisure, for transportation, or for sport, there are numerous health benefits associated with this low-impact exercise.

Cardiovascular health

One of the most obvious health benefits of cycling is its positive impact on cardiovascular health. Regular cycling helps strengthen the heart muscles, improve blood circulation, and lower the risk of developing heart diseases. When you cycle, you increase your heart rate and target all major muscle groups in the body, which helps improve your overall cardiovascular fitness level.

Weight management

In addition to cardiovascular health, cycling can also help with weight management. Cycling is a highly effective calorie-burning exercise. Even a leisurely bike ride can burn a significant amount of calories, helping you maintain a healthy weight or even lose excess pounds. Furthermore, regular cycling can increase your metabolic rate, which means that your body continues to burn calories even after you have finished your ride.

Strengthening muscles and toning the body

Cycling is also excellent for strengthening muscles and toning the body. When you pedal, you engage and work a wide range of muscles, including the quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, and glutes. It is a low-impact exercise that puts less stress on the joints compared to other activities like running, making it a great option for people of all ages and fitness levels.

Mental health

In addition to physical benefits, cycling also has significant mental health benefits. Engaging in regular physical activity, such as cycling, can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. When you ride a bike, your body releases endorphins, which are natural mood-enhancing chemicals that can boost your overall mental well-being. Furthermore, cycling outdoors allows you to connect with nature, providing a sense of calmness and relaxation.

Immune system

In terms of overall well-being, cycling can also improve one’s immune system. Regular exercise helps boost the immune system, making you less susceptible to common illnesses and infections. A study published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine showed that individuals who engaged in regular cycling had a higher level of infection-fighting cells in their body compared to those who were sedentary.

Sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transportation

Furthermore, cycling is a sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transportation, making it beneficial not only for personal health but also for the environment. By choosing to cycle instead of driving a car, you contribute to reducing air pollution and carbon emissions, thus improving air quality and minimizing the negative impact on the environment.

Cycling is an excellent way to improve overall health and well-being. Its impact on cardiovascular health, weight management, muscle strength, and mental well-being are just a few of the many benefits one can experience. So, whether you cycle for leisure or for transportation, make sure to hop on a bike and enjoy all the incredible health benefits that cycling has to offer.

The post Quinoa Has Five Times More Omega-3 than Salmon and More Protein than Rice appeared first on The Costa Rica News.

Quinoa is a cereal native to South America.  Its center of origin is in Bolivia and Peru, and it is considered a whole grain.  It contains all the original parts of the seed, making it a great provider of protein, even much more than brown rice or salmon.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), this food contains great nutritional value among its grains.  Its bioactive compounds surpass traditional cereals in biological value.

«So, if we compare the essential amino acid content of quinoa with that of wheat and rice, we can appreciate its great nutritional advantage.  For example, for the amino acid lysine, quinoa, as it is also known, has 5.6 grams of amino acid / 16 grams of nitrogen, compared to rice which has 3.2 and wheat 2.8.  This is stated by the entity in its report ‘Quinoa: ancient crop to contribute to global food security’.

Likewise, this cereal has minerals such as iron, magnesium, calcium and zinc, which also exceed its nutritional percentage compared to the cereals mentioned above.

For example, its presence of iron is “triple that of wheat and five times that of rice”, as well as in the case of zinc it almost doubles the amount of its value in wheat and quadruples it in that of corn, according to the FAO.

Therefore, it is not a surprise that people who have a vegetarian diet consume quinoa as one of the main foods within their nutritional field, since the presence of its essential amino acids – the basic components of proteins – contribute to the replacement of meat products, along with other vegetable proteins.

Presence of omega-3 in quinoa

Other of its properties is the presence of healthy fats such as omega-3.  This type of polyunsaturated is found in plant and animal foods, such as salmon, oils, and some nuts and seeds.

According to the MedlinePlus information portal of the United States National Library of Medicine, this component contributes to the strengthening of the neuronal part.  Likewise, to keep the heart healthy and protected against strokes

Adding quinoa to your diet helps the body receive a higher value of Omega.  Every 100 grams of quinoa contains 8.35 omega-3s, surpassing fish such as salmon, which are also rich in this component.  However, this provides only 2.67 per 100 grams of the pseudocereal.  That is to say that in this case, the seed has five times more of this fat than this fish, according to nutritionist Carlos Andrés Zapata, CEO of ‘Cazamed’.

It is worth clarifying that the organism does not receive this value in its entirety.  It adapts only one part ingested, which is why it is essential that it be a complement to other foods in your daily diet.

Contributes to the generation of antioxidants

Quinoa can be one of your best allies, in preventing diseases of cell damage and even in reducing aging.  It contains large amounts of vitamin E, an organic molecule that protects body tissue from damage caused by free radicals.

According to the cosmetic brand ‘Bioxán’, quinoa also has vitamin C;  considered a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes these molecules that cause oxidative stress and cause loss of elasticity in the skin.  In addition, it contributes to the production of collagen in skin cells, which helps maintain the natural structure of the epidermis.Likewise, it has two antioxidant flavonoids: quercetin and kaemferol, which also help reduce the signs of aging, according to the aforementioned portal.

Finally, always remember to consult with your nutritionist or family doctor about the benefits and changes in your diet.  This is in order to avoid adverse effects or problems that may hinder the healthy state of your body.

The post Alzheimer’s, a reality that affects more and more people appeared first on The Costa Rica News.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, accounting for between 60 and 70 percent of dementia cases.  Every September 21, World Alzheimer’s Day is commemorated to raise awareness about this pathology that especially affects older adults.

It is estimated that by 2050 the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease will double in Europe and triple worldwide.  In Costa Rica it is estimated that there are more than a thousand people affected by the disease.

This disease was described for the first time in 1907 by the German doctor Alois Alzheimer, who was treating a patient who developed memory impairment and symptoms of paranoid delusions.  His autopsy revealed brain atrophy.

What is the cause of this disease?

In reality, there are still many unknowns about its etiology.  Advanced age is the main risk factor for developing this disease;  The prevalence increases between 65 and 85 years of age, doubling every 5 years;  Other risk factors have been identified such as genetics, female sex, low educational and cultural level, previous head trauma, high blood pressure, among others.

The clinical manifestations that occur in a patient with Alzheimer’s are due to alterations in various neurotransmitters synthesized in neuronal cells, mainly acetylcholine, which plays an important role in memory management and the connection of different brain areas to carry out tasks.

Some data that helps us identify a patient with Alzheimer’s are:

  • Deterioration of recent memory rather than remote memory, that is, the patient often does not remember what he did in the last hour or what he was talking to a while ago.
  • Aphasia, which consists of an alteration of language, verbal influence and word search.
  • Apraxia, which is manifested by the inability to perform tasks that were previously performed without problem.
  • Patients often present with anosognosia, in which the patient does not recognize his or her inability to remember situations, words, or things.

Is it possible to cure the disease?

Although significant progress has been made, it is not yet possible to cure it, so its treatment is symptomatic, that is, the symptoms that the patient manifests are treated.  Pharmacological treatment based on inhibitors of the enzyme that degrades acetylcholine to compensate for the relative deficit of the neurotransmitter that exists in these patients.  These types of therapies could slow the progression of the disease.

Can we prevent the disease?

Although it is still being studied, preventive measures are proposed to avoid smoking and alcoholism, as well as maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a healthy diet and regular physical activity.  It is also advisable to promote activities aimed at strengthening memory through memos, crossword puzzles, word searches, sudoku, among others.

In a new study, mice whose immune systems were trained against the microbial protein flagellin did not experience the usual detrimental effects of ingesting emulsifying food additives, pointing to a possible new way to combat various chronic inflammatory diseases.

Dietary emulsifiers are substances added to processed foods to prevent mixed ingredients from separating.  Previous research has suggested that consumption of certain emulsifiers may alter the gut microbiome in such a way that it increases the ability of some microbes to invade the protective mucosal lining of the gut, and may lead to chronic intestinal inflammation.

Flagellin, a protein expressed by many bacteria that forms their whip-shaped flagella, allowing them to swim and therefore conferring motility, may play a key role in promoting such inflammation.

Training the gut’s immune system to attack flagellin

Building on that earlier research, Melissa Kordahi and Benoit Chassaing, researchers at Inserm, Institut Cochin and Université Paris Cité, France, and their colleagues hypothesized that training the gut’s immune system to attack flagellin, immunizing it against it, could help protect against the harmful consequences of consuming food emulsifiers.

To test this idea, they immunized mice against flagellin for several weeks and then fed them food containing two common food emulsifiers, carboxymethylcellulose (E466) and polysorbate 80 (E433). .

They observed that immunized mice did not experience invasion of microbes into their mucosa after ingesting emulsifiers.  Furthermore, immunization also appeared to protect against chronic intestinal inflammation and metabolic deregulations normally observed after ingestion of emulsifiers.

The researchers also note that, after eating foods with emulsifiers, mice immunized with flagellin continued to experience changes in the proportions of several species of microbes that make up their gut microbiomes.

This suggests that the protective effects of flagellin immunization may be related to its effects on microbial function and movement and not solely to an effect on microbiota composition.

They note that more research will be needed to further understand the potential use of flagellin immunization and the extent to which these findings could translate to humans in the future, but this study suggests that flagellin immunization could be a potential new strategy. to protect against inflammatory conditions that may be promoted by alterations in the host-microbiota interaction, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Preventing chronic inflammatory conditions

“This study suggests that selective modulation of the gut microbiota may be an effective way to prevent various chronic inflammatory conditions, such as metabolic deregulations that occur during the consumption of commonly used food additives,” concludes Chassaing.

Psilocybin, a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in certain mushrooms, has gained significant attention in recent years for its potential therapeutic benefits. This essay will explore the various advantages of psilocybin, including its potential to treat mental health disorders, its ability to enhance emotional well-being, and its potential role in addiction treatment.

Potential for Treating Mental Health Disorders

Psilocybin has shown promising results in the treatment of mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research suggests that the compound may help alleviate symptoms by promoting neuroplasticity and enhancing the brain’s ability to generate new connections, resulting in improved mood and emotional resilience. Studies have shown that psilocybin-assisted therapy can lead to long-lasting improvements in mental health, providing an alternative treatment option for individuals who have not responded well to traditional therapies.

Enhanced Emotional Well-being

Another benefit of psilocybin is its potential to enhance emotional well-being. The compound has been reported to induce profound and positive changes in perception, mood, and consciousness. Users often describe a heightened sense of interconnectedness, serenity, and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. This newfound perspective can lead to enhanced emotional well-being, increased self-awareness, and improved overall quality of life.

Potential for Addiction Treatment

Psilocybin has also shown promise in the treatment of addiction. Research suggests that it can help individuals break free from patterns of substance abuse by disrupting the brain’s reward system and promoting introspection and self-reflection. Studies conducted on individuals struggling with alcohol and tobacco addiction have demonstrated significant reductions in cravings and an increased likelihood of abstinence after psilocybin-assisted therapy. The compound’s ability to address the underlying psychological and emotional factors contributing to addiction makes it a potentially transformative tool in addiction treatment.

Safety and Low Risk of Dependence

Psilocybin is non-addictive and generally considered to be safe when used in controlled settings with trained professionals. Unlike many conventional medications used to treat mental health conditions, psilocybin does not carry the risk of dependence or severe withdrawal symptoms. This makes it an appealing alternative for individuals who may be concerned about the potential long-term effects or addictive properties of traditional treatments.

Psilocybin holds significant potential as a therapeutic tool, offering benefits in the treatment of mental health disorders, enhancing emotional well-being, and potentially aiding in addiction treatment. Despite its limitations and ongoing research, the compound’s safety profile and promising results suggest a bright future in the field of mental health and well-being. As further research and understanding of psilocybin continues to develop, it may provide a valuable addition to the arsenal of treatments available to individuals seeking relief from mental health challenges.

Dealing with an illness can be an incredibly challenging and overwhelming experience. However, the ability to bounce back and maintain a positive mindset is crucial in navigating through the difficult journey of illness. Resilience, the capacity to adapt and recover from adversity, plays a significant role in not only surviving but thriving during an illness. This essay explores the importance of resilience and how it can empower individuals to face their health challenges head-on.

1. Emotional Strength:

Resilience during an illness begins with emotional strength. It involves acknowledging and accepting the emotions that arise from the illness, such as fear, anxiety, and sadness, while maintaining a positive outlook. By cultivating emotional strength, individuals can better cope with the uncertainties and setbacks that come with being ill.

2. Adaptability:

Illness often necessitates lifestyle changes and adjustments. Resilience enables individuals to adapt to these changes with flexibility and grace. Whether it involves modifying daily routines, making dietary adjustments, or seeking alternative treatments, being resilient helps individuals embrace these changes and find new ways to thrive despite the limitations imposed by the illness.

3. Support System:

A strong support system is crucial during an illness. Resilient individuals understand the importance of reaching out to loved ones, friends, and healthcare professionals for support. By building a network of support, individuals can lean on others for emotional support, guidance, and practical assistance, which in turn strengthens their resilience.

4. Positive Mindset:

Maintaining a positive mindset is an essential aspect of resilience. It involves focusing on the present moment, practicing gratitude, and finding joy in small victories. By adopting a positive mindset, individuals can navigate the challenges of illness with optimism, hope, and determination. This positive outlook also has a profound impact on overall well-being and can enhance the healing process.

5. Self-Care:

Resilience during an illness also means prioritizing self-care. This includes taking care of one’s physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Engaging in activities that bring joy, practicing relaxation techniques, and seeking professional help when needed are all important aspects of self-care. By nurturing oneself, individuals can build resilience and maintain a sense of control over their lives, even in the face of illness.

Being resilient during an illness is not about denying the challenges or pretending everything is fine. It is about acknowledging the difficulties, adapting to the changes, and finding the strength to persevere. Resilience empowers individuals to face their health challenges head-on, maintain a positive mindset, and ultimately thrive despite the illness. By cultivating resilience, individuals can transform their experience with illness into one of personal growth, strength, and empowerment.
