Starting June 4, 2024, the American airline Southwest will operate the Orlando, Florida (MCO) – San José, Costa Rica (SJO) route with a daily flight permanently, the company announced this past Thursday.  Florida is one of the states with the best prospects for visiting the country and the cities with the highest number of travelers to Costa Rica.

The flight will depart from Orlando airport at 11:30 am (US time) and arrive in San Jose at 12:45 pm (local time).  The return flight will take off at 8:55 a.m. from the Juan Santamaría airport and will arrive in Orlando at 2:15 p.m.  (US time).

Baltimore and Denver

Also starting June 4 and until August 4, 2024, Southwest will go from one to two weekly flights (Saturdays and Sundays) from the US cities of Baltimore and Denver to San José, facilitating the arrival of more tourists to Costa Rica at the beginning of the summer and vacation season in North America.

“Air connectivity plays a fundamental role in the development of our tourism sector.  This announcement is the result of the work we do at the ICT, in this case in conjunction with AERIS, to attract airlines.  We hope to close the year with an income of close to 2.5 million tourists, which would exceed the numbers of visits by air prior to the pandemic,” said William Rodríguez, Minister of Tourism.

Contributing to tourism development

“The strengthening of routes and increased frequencies to Baltimore and Denver, as well as the new route to Orlando, represents a milestone for tourism and connectivity in our country, this is an example of the result of the joint work between the government and AERIS for continue contributing to tourism development.  We are extremely pleased with Southwest for trusting Costa Rica as a destination, generating new opportunities for passengers to live the pure life experience,” said Ricardo Hernández, executive director of AERIS Holding Costa Rica. The United States is our main tourist issuing market, between January and September of this year 1,095,135 tourists have visited us from that country.

In celebration of World Tourism Day, on September 27, and taking into account the motto of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), for this 2023 “Investments for tourism: people, planet and prosperity.”  It is important to observe how the recovery of the sector has gone, and how this motto has been fulfilled.

As is known, tourism is one of the main activities in the world, the sector generates thousands of direct and indirect jobs, as well as personal development and well-being.  However, the COVID-19 pandemic hit it drastically, and for Costa Rica it was no exception.

It is important to put the future of tourism in perspective with all the aspects that may affect it.  There is no doubt that it is a very vulnerable sector but also very resilient to all changes.  However, there remain important risks, especially economic and geopolitical ones, to be taken forward.

More value for the tourism money

UNWTO expects tourists to increasingly seek value for money and travel close to home in response to the challenging economic environment, with recovery to pre-pandemic levels occurring by 2024 or slightly beyond.

But I consider that for this several aspects need to be covered, among them recovering the personnel who were in the sector and that is that according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC, for its acronym in English), with the hit of the pandemic Of COVID-19, the sector contracted by 50.4% in 2020, resulting in a loss of 62 million jobs.

However, 2021 saw the start of the sector’s recovery as its total contribution to the global economy grew from US$4.8 trillion to US$5.8 trillion and jobs increased by 18.2 million, but still insufficient.

Environmental sustainability

In the environmental sustainability part, travelers see how to help the environment as a very important aspect when preparing an adventure, whether locally or internationally, and this makes them look for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. and they are increasingly looking for ways to help our planet through internet searches or social networks.

In the case of our country, we can afford to say that it is a destination that has great natural biodiversity that makes it position itself as one of the best destinations for nature lovers. However, a lot of work still needs to be done in these areas.

Inclusion for all

Finally, the issue of inclusion for all people in the sector, whether at the level of employees or visitors, will ensure full prosperity in both fields.  There are more and more tourist recreation spaces that have innovated and transformed their attractions so that everyone can access them. In this it can be said with certainty that Costa Rica is a very accessible country for its national and international tourists, but it is something that It still needs to work from education to acceptance, but we are on the right track.

Since its conception in 2013, Expoviajes has established itself as the leading event in outbound tourism in the country, being the reference point for Costa Ricans eager for new travel experiences.

Born in 2013 at the now Wyndham Herradura Hotel, the fair has witnessed the evolution of the national tourism sector, adapting and reinventing itself.Since its first editions, Expoviajes has stood out for its enthusiasm and innovation.  With slogans such as “The world in your hands” in 2013 and “The trip of your dreams awaits you” in 2016, it reflected not only the variety of destinations offered but also the aspirations and desires of Tico travelers.

Year after year, the number of exhibitors and visitors increased, evidencing the growth and strength of this platform. In 2018, under the motto “From here you will see the world”, record visitation numbers were reached.

Unprecedented challenges

However, like many global events, Expoviajes faced unprecedented challenges with the arrival of the pandemic in 2020. The edition scheduled for June of that year had to be canceled, but this did not discourage the organizers.  Thus, a special version was carried out focused on Jalisco, Mexico.

In 2022, a new chapter in the history of the fair was written with its move to the Costa Rica Convention Center, a space that reflects the magnitude and relevance of the event.  The expectation for post-pandemic travel was palpable in the air and the public response was immediate.

Finally, the 2023 edition appears even more strengthened.  Personalized attention to visitors is prioritized, promoting safe and responsible travel purchases, further strengthening the B2B segment with ExpoviajesNetWork. For Expoviajes, the Tico does matter and seeks to provide a high-level space for travelers at heart.

Travel, live, feel!

Under the slogan Travel, live, feel!  The organization brought together more than 70 exhibiting companies, highlighting the participation of official tourism promotion entities in the region. With its ninth edition, Expoviajes demonstrates once again the traveling spirit of the Ticos is still alive and stronger than ever.

Starting this past Tuesday, the Spanish airline Iberojet began its flights from Madrid, Spain, to Juan Santamaría International Airport using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

With this flight from Madrid to Costa Rica, Iberojet launches the first phase of its implementation plan for the use of SAF.  In this way, it anticipates the legal obligations to use 2% of this type of fuel established for the year 2025.

Sustainable aviation fuel is produced from raw materials of renewable origin.  Likewise, it allows reducing approximately 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions that are generated in its life cycle compared to that of conventional fossil origin.

Details of the flight

The flight chosen to begin the use of sustainable fuel took off this Tuesday from Madrid to Costa Rica and was carried out on an Airbus A350-900 aircraft. This aircraft was built with lighter materials, more efficient engines and cabin configuration to reduce fuel consumption above most aircraft in its category.

Additionally, this aircraft model was designed with features that improve passenger comfort and reduce the effects of jetlag or time difference. This is thanks to the fact that it has a lower cabin pressure compared to other aircraft, LED lighting, better humidity control, larger windows and a quieter cabin.

Reactions of the ICT and Iberojet

“We thank Iberojet for choosing Costa Rica to carry out this first flight from Madrid with sustainable fuel, confirming that tourism and sustainability go hand in hand. “What Iberojet does is consistent with the country’s vision of Costa Rica, which is to base our tourism actions on the country’s natural attractions to build a society with better living conditions, especially thinking about future generations,” said William Rodríguez, minister of Tourism.

José Ignacio Lugo, deputy general director of Iberojet, expressed: “this is the beginning of our new ESG Strategy 2026, together with Ávoris, in which Iberojet has as one of its priority objectives reducing the environmental impact of its activities thanks to the use of SAF on their journeys.

“For the airline, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a strategic priority.  For this reason, we will follow all European Union (EU) regulations regarding the decarbonization of aviation and we will anticipate them whenever feasible,” he said. Iberojet flies to Costa Rica since July 2021 with two weekly flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays. From Spain, more than 41,000 Spanish tourists have visited Costa Rica by air from January to September 2023. The Iberian nation is the fourth largest source of European travelers after Germany, France and the United Kingdom

Costa Rica, in collaboration with Texas Tech University (TTU) Guest Center, are pleased to present the results of the First Diagnosis of Training Needs in Tourism for the Central American Region and the Dominican Republic.  This comprehensive study was carried out over five months, from December 2022 to April 2023, and was based on a regional survey that involved various sectors of the tourism industry in leadership positions.

The main objective of this diagnosis was to analyze and understand the current training needs in the region, with a focus on the development of digital, technical and soft skills, as well as leadership.  The information collected was cross-referenced with demographic data, characteristics of individuals and their organizations, and complemented with sectoral data and external studies to support the findings.

All invited to the Event for the results presentation

Costa Rica extends a cordial invitation to the general public to a free and open event, in which the complete results of this report will be presented.  The event will take place on the Texas Tech University – Costa Rica campus next Thursday, September 28 at 9:00 a.m.  Additionally, the option to attend virtually is offered.  To secure a space, prior registration is required.

“This diagnosis is a powerful tool for professionals and entrepreneurs in the tourism sector of Central America and the Dominican Republic, as it maps the current state of the regional tourism industry, in terms of training needs, development of strategies and  actions for the training and retention of human talent, a situation already evidenced by the UNWTO in its study of programs to improve the competitiveness of destinations, explained Ellen Rose, Executive Director of Texas Tech University – Costa Rica.

Main conclusions:

High Interest in Skill Development

One of the most notable conclusions is the high interest of both professionals and organizations in the development of skills in the tourism sector.  This approach is perceived as a priority to improve the region’s tourism competitiveness.

 Focus on Foreign Languages

There is a strong emphasis on the development of foreign languages, especially English, French and German.  This approach aligns with the nationality of tourists visiting the region and the need for effective communication.

Importance of Talent Management

Respondents emphasize the importance of including a specific skills development plan for the tourism sector in their strategic human talent plans.  In addition, they highlight the need for these plans to be known by the organization’s leaders.

Training Modalities

Most training efforts occur during the workday, using hybrid modalities (virtual or in-person) and techniques such as on-the-job training, coaching, and project assignments.  However, the main obstacles to implementation are time, budget and lack of internal trainers.

 Priority Technical Skills

Tourism sector leaders express great interest in developing technical skills related to team management, human talent management, sustainability and data analysis.

 Customer Service Redefined

The importance of customer service is highlighted, but emphasis is placed on the need for a deeper analysis of the customer experience to create effective service protocols.

 Key Soft Skills

The most important soft skills identified are leadership, problem solving, collaboration and time management, in line with the trends of the World Economic Forum on the Future of Work.

 Impact on Talent Management

The results of this diagnosis have the potential to redesign talent management tools, such as performance evaluation models, career plans and high potential models, to align them with the identified needs.

The post Essential Items for Expats: What to Pack When Moving Abroad appeared first on The Costa Rica News.

Moving abroad can be an exciting and challenging experience. As an expat, it is crucial to make strategic choices about what to pack. This essay will discuss the essential items that expats should consider bringing along when relocating internationally. It is important to prioritize necessities, important documents, electronics, and items that will help create a sense of home in the new environment.

1. Important Documents:

Before embarking on an international relocation, it is vital to pack essential documents such as passports, visas, and medical records. These documents are crucial for legal and medical purposes, ensuring a smooth transition in the new country [1].

2. Prescription Medications:

Expats should pack an ample supply of prescription medications to avoid any disruptions in their healthcare routine. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional and obtain the necessary prescriptions before moving abroad.

3. Electronics:

In today’s interconnected world, electronics play a significant role in our daily lives. Expats should bring along essential electronics like cell phones, laptops, and chargers. These devices are not only essential for communication but also for work-related tasks, such as remote work or staying connected with family and friends.

4. Clothing and Shoes:

When packing clothing, it is important to consider the climate and cultural norms of the destination country. Expats should pack durable shoes suitable for the local terrain, as well as larger-sized clothing if moving to an Asian country, where sizes may differ from Western standards.

5. Personal Comfort Items:

To make the new environment feel like home, expats should consider packing personal comfort items such as favorite books, photographs, or small mementos. These items can provide a sense of familiarity and comfort in the new surroundings.

6. Kitchen and Household Items:

While it is often more cost-effective to purchase larger or daily products once in the new country, expats may consider bringing along certain kitchen and household items that are not easily available or of lower quality in the destination country [2]. Researching online shopping options and availability of specific items in the new country can aid in making informed decisions.

When preparing to move abroad, expats should prioritize essential items that will ensure a smooth transition and help create a comfortable living environment. Important documents, prescription medications, electronics, appropriate clothing and shoes, personal comfort items, and select kitchen and household items are some of the essential items to consider when packing. By making strategic choices and considering the specific needs of the destination country, expats can embark on their international journey with confidence and peace of mind.

Costa Rica, a small Central American country known for its stunning natural beauty, has become an increasingly popular tourist destination in recent years. The importance of tourism for Costa Rica cannot be overstated, as it plays a vital role in the country’s economy, conservation efforts, and cultural preservation.

Economy

Firstly, tourism is a significant contributor to Costa Rica’s economy. The revenue generated from tourism activities, such as accommodations, transportation, and attractions, has become a crucial source of income for the country. According to the Costa Rican Tourism Board, tourism accounts for nearly 8% of the country’s GDP, providing jobs and opportunities for thousands of Costa Ricans. The influx of tourist dollars helps improve infrastructure, supports local businesses, and contributes to the overall economic growth of the nation.

Conservation

Secondly, tourism plays a pivotal role in Costa Rica’s conservation efforts. Known for its rich biodiversity and lush rainforests, Costa Rica has made significant strides in environmental protection. The income generated from tourism allows the government to invest in conservation projects, creating national parks, protected areas, and wildlife reserves. These initiatives help preserve the unique flora and fauna found in Costa Rica while promoting sustainable tourism practices. Visitors are encouraged to engage in eco-friendly activities, such as wildlife observation, hiking, and responsible beach tourism, thus ensuring the protection of the country’s natural resources for future generations.

Culture and heritage

Lastly, tourism helps preserve Costa Rican culture and heritage. As tourists flock to the country, they are exposed to Costa Rican traditions, customs, and cuisine. This interaction promotes cultural exchange and understanding, fostering a sense of pride and appreciation among locals. Additionally, the demand for traditional crafts, music, and dance performances provides economic opportunities for local artisans and cultural practitioners. By preserving and showcasing their cultural heritage, Costa Ricans can maintain their identity and pass it on to future generations.

Tourism plays a vital role in Costa Rica’s economy, conservation efforts, and cultural preservation. The revenue generated from tourism activities supports the country’s economic growth, allows for investment in conservation projects, and promotes the preservation of Costa Rican culture and heritage. As Costa Rica continues to attract tourists with its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and warm hospitality, the importance of tourism for the country will only continue to grow.
